Drawing Upside-Down

The exercise I did today was drawing upside down. I showed the images right side up, mostly just to give a sense of how close (or not) I came to the original. I enlarged the image on my computer screen and tried to copy it line by line, starting from the top left corner of the upside down image. The point of this exercise (as explained in the website, link provided below) was to help me realize that drawings aren't necessarily just made up of one large image, but rather a bunch of lines.

I realize that my drawing came out extremely distorted. As far as trying to get as close to the original as possible, even though the resemblance is there, I consider this a fail in that aspect. What I do consider a success is the fact that it actually looks like a person (with a tiny head!) I think it gives me a pretty good baseline in reference to my abilities in realistic drawing. It also helped me to realize that big pieces aren't so intimidating if you break it down, not just into shapes, but even further into lines.

You should go give this exercise a try and post your results in the comments section—I would love to see it!
