Dory, Num Nom, and Exercises

Today I did two tutorials with my niece. Excuse the picture, it came out too light so I had to put a filter on it to make it darker.
The first tutorial we did was Dory from Finding Nemo/Finding Dory from Art for Kids. I have to say, I really love these tutorials. He does them with what I'm assuming are his children and it's so cute to see him interact with them while teaching them how to draw. They are really great tutorials to do if you are trying to teach any children how to draw. It doesn't go into much of the technical knowledge, but it could definitely help them spark their artistic creativity! As far as my rendition of Dory, I am pleased with how it came out for the most part. The only part I colored in was the black parts and I did that with my #2 pencil. I'm getting more excited to start coloring in, so I may start that in the next few days.
My second tutorial was a Num Nom, which I believe is a toy. My niece picked it out. It was really cute. Even though it was simple, I had a harder time with that then with Dory. There were technically three characters in the tutorial, but I only did the first, mostly because I was tired.
I've also been considering what I want to do next, medium-wise. The obvious next step will be colored pencils. I'll begin to do some research on the differences between brands. I'll also try to find out if it makes a difference whether I use cheap dollar store pencils versus artistic grade quality. I'm sure there are some quality differences, but it may not matter where I'm not doing this professionally.
You'll also notice in the bottom right corner that there are some basic shapes. A friend told me that one of the best ways to improve your hand's muscle memory is to use a stencil (which I borrowed from my niece) and trace a "perfect" shape onto the paper. Without a stencil, trace the shape without lifting the pencil. I did a circle, star, and heart. After tracing them for a few minutes, I tried to do them without the stencil or a guide. My freehand attempts actually came out pretty close to the original! I think I will be trying to incorporate these exercises into more of my drawing sessions.
Anyway, let me know what you think! I welcome all critiques and suggestions. If there is something you think I should draw, throw it in the comments or in the contact form!
